When Garth Brooks hinted that he might make a pop record, I was shocked. After all, for a few years, Garth was the biggest selling artist in country music, and he still sells a lot of records. I should not have been surprised. To me, Garth has always been a bit "on the edge", because his songs are sometimes controversial and his concert special effects are more in tune with what you'd see at a rock show.

Plus, when Garth was growing up in Oklahoma, his musical heroes included pop singer Billy Joel and rock group icons Journey, Queen and Kiss. However, even though I'm a Garth fan, I passed on Chris Gaines' Greatest Hits for so long after its '99 release, because I heard bits and pieces and decided that Garth didn't sound like himself. Now that Garth has put his career on hold, I finally decided to check out the Chris Gaines album. This record, which Don Was produced, is the "greatest hits" package for Garth's fictional alter ego, pop-rock superstar Chris Gaines, and it even includes Chris' biography and descriptions of how the songs were supposedly written.

There's some good music on here, but overall, I think Chris Gaines' Greatest Hits was a big misstep by Garth. In my opinion, Garth didn't get popular by using musical gimmicks or passing himself off as somebody else. He built his career by putting out great songs and records that his fans, myself included, could relate to, and his songs helped him sell his records. Furthermore, for the most part, every record Garth has put out has that one song that just grabs you by the throat and says "Listen to me"--for instance, "The Dance" from his debut album, "The Thunder Rolls" from No Fences, "The River" from Ropin' The Wind, and "When You Come Back To Me Again" from Scarecrow. There's not a whole lot on this record that really excites me. To be sure, Chris Gaines' Greatest Hits is not a total washout. It has its moments, even though it's different from Garth's other records. However, there are not a lot of original-sounding songs on here, although for the most part Garth and his fellow musicians did their jobs well.

The opening chord progression of the nostalgic song "Main Street", for instance, sounds just like the introduction to Bob Dylan's "Knockin' On Heaven's Door". In the singing of "Unsigned Letter", Garth even sounds a little like Tom Petty or Wallflowers lead singer Jakob Dylan. The concluding love songs "Maybe" and "My Love Tells Me So", though they are uplifting songs, sound a lot like the Beatles' late '60s and early '70s songs. This record's low point, however, is "Right Now". Garth takes a great song with a positive message and turns it into a mangled rap song. Garth never has stooped that low before, even on his country records. In short, although Chris Gaines' Greatest Hits is listenable, I think Garth's attempt to turn himself into a rock star falls short. Garth has rock influences that show up in his music.

However, to me, he's always been a country artist first and foremost, and on this record, I think he sounds at times like an artist out of touch with his audience. Despite great work by his backup musicians, he not only doesn't sound original but also manages in one instance to trash a classic song. At present Garth isn't touring or making music, choosing to spend time with his daughters in Oklahoma. If he comes back as an artist, I hope he focuses more on making the music that got him noticed in the first place. If Garth is in permanent retirement, then I think Scarecrow, the follow-up album to this one, is a much better representation of who Garth actually is and a more fitting send-off. While the condition of the CD was It did not effect the function of the CD, it plays perfectly. That's not my issue. My issue is that the jewel case is cracked.

THAT effects the function of the case! That makes it a disappointment. I still love Garth as Chris Gaines. This is my second CD. So I'm satisfied. Oh yea, the booklet shows a little wear but since I never take it out of the case, I'm ok with it's condition. It does not show any signs of tears, just a bit of wear. I took 1 star away because of the cracked case, nothing more. So, it's strange to invent a character and play that character in public. That's what Garth Brooks did. Brooks caught a lot of flack for trying something new. I think his creative choice showed remarkable courage, and the people putting him down for it only exposed their own lack of imagination. Aside from the fictional artist, the music isn't bad. I always find myself wanting Gaines to rock harder. The album is a piece of music history, and one of the songs turned out to be a decent seller.

Brooks took a risk and showed some guts. Good for him. Best thing to listen to when I drop by my local gym new University of Florida. Nothing pumps me up to pump like the harsh reality of never knowing what Garth Brooks would have been like as a Hollywood rock star. If you, too, are in pursuit of crunching out those sweet sweet Gaines gains in Gainesville? You can't go wrong, throwing this disc up in your dad's Walkman, my dude! It was great music in and it still is today. No, it's not typical Garth. It's not even country music. Once you eliminate those preconceived notions you can really listen to this CD.

I have heard people call this the "worst CD ever" and "Garth's mistake" and I can't understand why. This album is brillant. I listen to "Chris" constantly and have purchased 3 of them one for car, home, and office. Some of the tunes are very mellow, such as "It Doesn't Matter to the Sun", "Maybe", and "Drifting Away". Other songs have a soft edge to them, such as "Snow In July" and "White Flag". It's a nice balance, although his softer songs are superior to his attempt at edge. The best song on the album is "Drifting Away", a ballad about a man in love who cannot committ. The "skip over" song is the one released as a single, "Right Now", a rap attempt with the chorus of the 60's song "Everybody Get Together, Try To Love One Another Right Now". Forget it's Garth singing, forget Garth is country. and don't read the liner notes which makes it sound like a "concept album" and enjoy it for what it is - good music. This album should be in an "adult comtemporary" or "vocals" category, not country.

Report abuse. As a long-time Garth Brooks fan I was interested to hear what this album sounded like. Even without the film that was supposed to accompany this album it’s still a good listen. More radio-friendly soft rock than country, it showcases Brooks’ more theatrical side.

An album that is varied,with great songs. This man has an incredible voice and knack to nail a song. I have every album, dvd etc and have seen him live years ago and hope to see him again when he comes over on his upcoming world tour - but I only came accross this album review a month of so back and I love it.
